"On the evening of November 2, 1965, Tony Webner, Goodyear's Director of Racing, called Shelby American, a Goodyear distributor in Los Angeles, CA. He had a favor to ask."
"Webner explained he was at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah with Craig Breedlove and Walt Arfons. Their two land speed record programs were stalled as Arfons' Wingfoot Express rocket car had some major problems with the propulsion system and Craig's jet-powered Spirit of America needed a few days of work before he could make the next attempt. Goodyear had the salt reserved for the next four days but the cars couldn't use it, and if you weren't using the Salt you had to give it up for other record attempts, in this case to a readied Art Arfons (Walt's competitive brother) in his "Green Monster" jet car, waiting for his chance on Firestones."
"The only car available at Shelby American was Daytona Cobra Coupe CSX2287, the first Coupe built and the only one made at Shelby American in the US. It had just come off a nationwide tour after the Coupes had won the 1965 FIA GT World Championship."
The rest is history. The car, intended only to "hold" the Salt while the other cars were readied, broke 23 National and International FIA Records. The full story is told as only Peter Brock (designer of the Daytona Cobra Coupe) can tell it, along with a complete list of the 23 records broken.
